Robert Horan

1922 -

Robert Horan's 1948 A Beginning was selected for the Yale Series of Young Poets by W. H. Auden. The book was dedicated to Gian Carlo Menotti and Samuel Barber, with whom he was closely associated.

A Beginning was Horan's only book and one of the most important works to come out of the Activists group. The Activists of the 1940s wrote intense, driven poetry, derived from American and English models in Modernism. Horan's great technical virtuosity and the influence of American poet Hart Crane can be seen in A Beginning.
