Alfred Hayes

British writer Alfred Hayes contributed significantly to American culture and is best known for writing the poem "Joe Hill," which was set to music by American composer Earl Robinson.

Born in London, Alfred Hayes studied at New York’s City College (now City University of New York) and worked in the newspaper business, writing novels and poetry as well. He served in the U. S. Army Special Services in World War II.

Hayes became a prolific writer in Hollywood, with several television series and screenplays to his name.
