Paul Goodman

1911 - 1972

Paul Goodman was not only a poet, but also a great intellectual mind and was also an established sociologist. His most significant work is the sociological book Growing Up Absurd: Problems of Youth in the Organized Society (1960).

A native of New York City, Paul Goodman was immersed in city life from birth and completed his Ph.D. in literature at the University of Chicago. Writing essays, short stories and poetry prolifically, Goodman did not publish his first novel until 1942 (The Grand Piano).

Goodman's great success came with Growing Up Absurd in 1960, and he became one of the seven founding members of the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. His radical political views and pacifism made him popular with the student generation in the 1960s.
