Besides writing poetry, Margaret Deland also wrote short stories and novels. Her texts about flowers have been set by Amy Marcy Beach and Edward MacDowell.

A native of Pennsylvania, Deland has only one volume of verse: The Old Garden and Other Verses (1886). Her most famous work is the novel John Ward, Preacher, though her other books and two-part autobiography were also popular. Deland and her husband took in unmarried women.
