The Milky Way

Composer's note:

"'The Milky Way' is a song arrangement of a choral interlude from the opera The Dreamers, which takes place in Sonoma, California in 1848 and tells a story of how we became Americans. At this moment in the opera, the Indian Princess Isadora, the last of her tribe, leads the women settlers of Sonoma in a lullaby to accompany the dreams of the sleeping citizens."

Text

The Milky Way
by Philip Littell

All along the Milky Way
I will follow all alone.
All along the trail of flowers
I will follow all alone.

Will you walk among the flowers
All the way to Heaven’s end?
Will you walk as my companion
As my husband, as my friend?

To the sky there is a ladder
All our souls must climb alone.
To the sky there is a ladder
Do not fall; it leads to home.

Oh, the sky can be a darkness,
And the moon may fail to shine,
And the flowers all may whither,
I am yours, love: Are you mine?

Where you lead me I will follow,
Where you settle I will stay
Here among the starry flowers,
All along the Milky Way.
